Malia K. Salaam

Reentry Career Center Manager, SERCO, Detroit at Work, A Michigan Works! Agency

Why is collaborative work important to you?

I have experienced working on projects with and without strong collaboration. Lack of collaboration can lead to individual burn out, redundancy of ideas, and wasted time and resources. Whereas collaboration between partners who have a shared vision sparks new ideas, deepens understanding, and creates opportunities to achieve outcomes more efficiently and sustainably. Collaborative work can lift up the process without sacrificing the product.

How do you envision collaborative work improving our impact?

I envision collaborative work will improve our impact by broadening our reach of influence beyond three dozen member states to a national agenda on reentry workforce reforms. I can see a shared syntax and canon of best practices for reentry workforce development because of this collaboration. I foresee the marketplace landscape being changed by more employers normalizing second chance hiring and more returning citizens creating opportunities through entrepreneurship. I am confident that with the lens that NRWC is focusing on this work, there will be a new generation of professionals eager to carry it on.
